Market Report - Asians Eye Dollar Value

WONG: Asian investors eyed a sharp rise in the U.S. dollar on Tuesday. The greenback gained as worries about a sharp global slowdown hurt many Asian currencies. Gold prices fell to their lowest level this year as investors sold most commodities. Japanese inflation data spread some gloom. Wholesale prices hit 7.1 percent in the world's number two economy. A 27 year high on the back of high commodity costs, such as the price of oil. In China signs that inflation may be peaking with consumer inflation tapping a 10-month low. Falling food prices are helping to curtail inflation in China but economists warn high production costs could push inflation up again soon. The Beijing Olympics have put the brighter side of China's potential in the spotlight but some expect companies to suffer once the games are over. Telecom giant China Mobile fell sharply in Hong Kong trade with investors fretting about the company's earnings growth. And in Shanghai the stock index fell to a 19-month low on concerns about the outlook for company profits.

Market Report - Stocks Climb Amid Caution

CHAN: Many Asian stock markets rose on Thursday. Central banks moved to boost liquidity in stormy financial markets. The U.S., European and Swiss central banks extended emergency lending to investment banks and strengthened liquidity programs to ease credit market strains. Japan's Nikkei edged higher. Gains in stocks like drug makers offset steep falls in exporters like carmaker Toyota and video game maker Nintendo. South Korea's stock market climbed as steelmakers rallied on strong earnings and a positive outlook. Markets in Australia and Hong Kong also edged higher. Despite the bounce, global markets still face key risks--including deeper credit problems and the tough task of reining in inflation. Chinese stocks fell. Investors fear an economic slowdown, despite perceived efforts by authorities to boost market confidence over the Beijing Olympics. Oil prices steadied after rising again in mid-week, but some analysts predict oil prices will again soar to record levels, after pulling back strongly this month.

Market Report - Merrill Writedown Hits Asia

ZHANG: Late Monday, Merrill Lynch announced a debt writedown of $5.7 billion and plans to raise $8.5 billion in capital. The news renewed investor concerns in Asia, and sent the markets tumbling. Merrill agreed to sell more than $30 billion of collateralized debt obligations to an affiliate of a private equity fund for about 22 cents on the dollar. Singapore's state-owned investment fund Temasek, meanwhile, pumped an additional $900 million into Merrill Lynch as part of Merrill's capital-raising effort. Temasek had invested a total of $5 billion in Merrill earlier, although Merrill shares have fallen by about half since then. But Korea Investment Corporation, South Korea's sovereign wealth fund, has converted $2 billion of preferred Merrill stock into common shares, more than two years ahead of schedule, in a move to cut losses from its first investment in a U.S. bank. The continued financial woes weighed on Asian stocks. Investors worry that financial sector troubles will further undermine the global economy. Asia has already seen its own writedowns from credit-related losses, with Australian banks continuing to decline Tuesday.
